Cloud computing Reviews 2021 -is a hot topic in recent years, businesses are moving workloads and applications to the cloud in order to take advantage of the low cost and increased accessibility.
According to a recent study, the global cloud computing market size is expected to grow from USD 371.4 billion in 2021 to USD 832.1 billion by 2025 (MarketsandMarkets Research Private Ltd, 2021).
The huge growth is credited to the global outbreak of Covid-19 and the new work-from-home culture.
It is estimated that approximately 80% of the enterprise workload will be in the cloud by 2022 (Market Research Future, 2021).
There are many reasons for businesses to apply cloud computing solutions. Cost reduction must be the major focus pushing businesses to get on board. Get AWS Solutions Architect certification to pursue your career in the cloud computing domain.
The cost can be generally saved from IT infrastructure, energy usage, daily operation, data security, more cost-saving details can be reached at: 3.
In addition to cost-related issues, businesses can be benefited in several aspects by moving workloads to the cloud.
For example, the cloud server can be scaled up and down at any time to meeting the changing needs due to the scalability of the cloud.
Enterprises can also apply multiple data security solutions with cloud computing to enjoy all-round data protection.
It is always suggested that the data and workloads can be even more secure to be placed on the cloud with complete security solutions like users can always restore all the data from a simple Backup.
When it comes to choosing a trusted cloud provider, it is always a difficult decision as there are so many options in the market.
There are thousands of reviews on the internet which is kind of a little confusing to decision-makers to choose the most suitable cloud provider for their enterprises.
In this article, I have selected a few leading cloud providers and made a simple comparison, hopefully, it can give readers a comparatively full picture and a valuable reference for cloud deployment.

Linode is a US-based company founded in 2003. Its infrastructure-as-a-service platform is deployed across 11 global markets like the US, Japan and India (Linode, 2021).
It put a lot of focus on the western market as 8 out of 11 available data centers are located in western countries.
Linode offers five kinds of cloud computing solutions like general server, high memory servers, dedicated CPU or GPU servers to target different cloud usage.
In fact, a dedicated GPU server is rare in the cloud computing industry. Compare to the other cloud providers tested, Linode has nice in-house monitoring and provide up-to-date tech support,
it does also provide free server upgrades in most of the case. Moreover, it is the only provider that can feature NodeBalancer from the working platform.
DigitalOcean is an American cloud infrastructure provider founded in 2011. It collocates the cloud server in 13 data centers, 4 of them are in Europe and 2 in Asia (DigitalOcean, 2000).
DigitalOcean offers 5 server plans for different segments, such as general droplet, CPU or memory optimized droplet.
It is surprising that DigitalOcean only takes around 1 minute to deploy a new cloud server. The super user-friendly UI helps non-expertise to manage and organize their servers.
Additionally, DigitalOcean is very innovative, it provides the most comprehensive services among tested cloud providers, and many more features are coming.
Furthermore, DigitalOcean values cloud efficiency in that lots of one-click installation of containers and apps are available on their servers.
Vultr is found in 1994 in Florida, it is strategically located in 17 data centres around the globe like Paris, Korea and Australia (Vultr, 2000). As for products, it offers cloud solutions like dedicated cloud, high-frequency cloud, block storage, etc.
Compared to other tested providers, it has the most datacenters with 4 in Europe and 3 in Asia which means Vultr has the highest-available worldwide networks.
Besides, users can directly deploy a Windows OS server on its panel which is not available at DO and Linode.
As Vultr not as famous as both of them, it is less likely to have performance variation due to neighbours on the same hardware. In fact, many users give compliments to Vultr cloud performance.

LayerStack, a comparatively young cloud provider, found in 2017. It has 4 data centers which are located in Singapore, Hong Kong, the US and Japan (LayerStack, 2021).
Similar to other cloud providers, it offers different cloud solutions for different cloud usage. Although LayerStack is an upgrowing brand, it provides diverse cloud features that are competitive to top cloud providers.
The cost of a cloud subscription is as low as other brands if users pick the year-plan they can enjoy an even cheaper offer. Moreover, all the plans include free migration service and unlimited data transfer.
Last but not least, it has just announced that the global private network is launching soon which is not available in DO, Linode and Vultr at the moment.
Price is always an important indication to evaluate providers’ service. The most similar offers are selected to conduct the price comparison, the cloud specifications are listed below table:
|Brand||Cloud Plan||vCPU||Memory||SSD Storage||Monthly Cost (USD)||Year Cost (USD)|
|Vultr||SSD Cloud Instances||6||16GB||320GB||80||960|
It can be seen from the table that DigialOcean, Linode and Vultr are applying a similar pricing strategy. In terms of vCPU, DigitalOcean provides 2 more vCPU than Linode and Vultr.
Although the plan specifications are slightly different, the price is exactly with the same amounts in every category of their price lists. However, there is a significant difference in LayerStack’s pricing strategy.
According to the table, it is 15% cheaper compared to other top providers in the monthly plan. It does offer big discounts to all year plans, it is calculated 47% cheaper to order a similar cloud server in LayerStack.
CPU is another important factor to judge cloud performance. As to create a comprehensive picture for audiences,
an independent and authoritative CPU benchmarking platform – PassMark Software has been used to evaluate the CPU applied to cloud server by top providers (PassMark Software, 2021).

Vultr is absent from the table because its cloud servers are powered by Intel Skylake processors (Virtual CPU a7769a6388d5 and 6db7dc0e7704) which are not selectable on PassMark, so I cannot compare all of them on a single platform.
According to the comparison, LayerStack is using the best CPU in both standard plan and CPU optimized plan with AMD EYPC 7702 and 7742 respectively.
They are rated much higher than the CPUs used by DigitalOcean and Linode. Linode gets the second place on this CPU comparison, while DO is in the last place.
Cloud providers are offering diverse cloud features and add-ons aiming to enhance cloud efficiency and data security.
In most cases, users just need to pay a small cost or even free to enjoy powerful features like private networking, auto-backup and DDoS protection.

Most of the top cloud providers offer similar features options to users as shown in the above table.
It is surprising that LayerStack provides unlimited data transfer to users because it is costing money for each additional GB in other brands.
Moreover, China Direct CN2 Route, the highest resilience, redundancy and low latency direct connection to China, is only available at LayerStack. It can be useful for enterprises that have business connections in China.
Cloud Computing Reviews | Conclusion
Cloud computing is an irresistible trend, it is expended global enterprise will gradually move all their workloads to the cloud to increase the working efficiency.
Indeed, the security concern of cloud computing still exists, that is why the selection of cloud providers is extremely significant, especially for workloads involve customer information and transaction data.
In this article, few top cloud providers including DigitalOcean, Linode, Vultr and LayerStack have been chosen to compare.
Based on their background, pricing, CPU usage and cloud features, a simple comparison is made aiming to provide audiences with a comprehensive picture and reference for cloud selection.
LayerStack is performing quite outstanding in this analysis no matter in pricing or cloud performance. It can be concluded that this upgrowing brand is the most cost-effective in tested providers.
In fact, each provider has its pros and cons, cloud users should choose the one best suit their needs.
